JULY 2007

TRAVELERS:

Dora and Tom Hudson left Corpus Christi on May 31st and drove to Dallas, Texas to attend a family reunion with their son, Jeremy Hudson and Dora’s daughter, Natalie, and her husband who came down from Oklahoma City. From Dallas, Dora and Tom drove to Oklahoma City with their daughter for a visit. They returned to Corpus Christi on June 7th. We hope their trip to Dallas and Oklahoma to visit with their family was enjoyable.

 

On the weekend of May 23”’, Mary Ann Vining and her husband, Mark, arrived in Victoria, Texas to visit with Mary Ann’s parents, Lula and Andy Christos, before leaving for Galveston, Texas, where they boarded a ship for a Gulf cruise. They had a most enjoyable time on the cruise.

 

On the weekend of June 25th~ Lula and Andy left for Wichita, Kansas, to visit with Mary Ann, Mark and their two sons, Drew and Brad, who were home from college. On July 1st~ Drew will leave for Kenya, Africa where he will participate in a mission that will prepare him for possible future work with his church. His brother, Brad, will be working for a law firm in Wichita during the summer.

 

Helen and Butch Pool left on June 8th,  2007 for Canada where they boarded a cruise ship for a week long cruise to Alaska. Accompanying them on the trip was Butch’s mother and step-father, JoAnn and Dallas Lundquist. They returned to Corpus Christi on June 15th. Butch and Helen’s wedding anniversary was on June 26th  and the cruise was a wonderful way to celebrate their anniversary.

 

On Saturday, June 9th, 2007, Constance and Gilbert Sanchez and their two children, Demetri and Sophia, left for Anaheim, California where Constance attended the Government. Finance Officers Association Annual Meeting. Following the meeting, they spent time at Disneyland and took a day long tour of Hollywood where they visited several movie studios and other places of interest. They returned to Corpus Christi on Friday, June 15th, after a week of work-related meetings and a very enjoyable vacation.

On Sunday, July 1st, Mrs. Marioara Moody and Dr. loan Nicolau will be hosting the coffee hour before Mrs. Moody leaves on July 6th on a trip to visit her native country, Romania. From Bucharest, she will take the lntercity Bucharest-Vienna train for a seven hour trip to Transylvania - Alba-Julia to visit her relative, professor Jleana and Dr. Anca Jivan. From there she will go to Sabes-Alba to visit her relatives, Marioara and Dr. Traian Postescu, and together they will hold a memorial service at the cemetery where her parents Ana and Nicolae Moga are buried. After the memorial service food and drinks will be taken to approximately one hundred old homeless persons. Mrs. Moody will be returning to Corpus Christi during the first part of September.

Miss Sophia Sissamis, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Louis Sissamis, left June 13,2007 for a European tour with a group from her school together with their instructor, Mr. Parks. They plan to tour several countries, including England, France, Italy, Turkey and Greece. We hope their three week tour will be both educational and enjoyable. May God be with them on their tour.

Her brother, Billy Louis Sissamis, is remaining in Washington, D.C. during the summer, since he is the business manager of his school paper, The Eagle, and is also working as an intern in the office of Congressman Solomon Ortiz.

 

VISITORS:

Staci and Scott Jones and their two children, Samantha and Austin, formerly of Lacey, Washington, arrived in Corpus Christi on June 27th for a visit with Staci’s parents, George and Peggy Paraskevas before proceeding to North Carolina where they will be living for a short time. Scott has retired from the Army after serving for twenty-five years. While here they visited with Staci’s grandmother, Mrs. Tasia Paul, her sister and brother-in-law, Litsa and Robert Guerra, her brother John Paraskevas and many other friends and relatives. We hope their visit here was enjoyable.

 

 

CONGRATULATIONS:

On Saturday, June l6. 2007,  the children of Mr. & Mrs. Abraham Bechara hosted a 40th  Wedding Anniversary party for their parents at the North Shore Country Club in Portland. The dinner arid dance held in their honor was enjoyed by all who attended the celebration. We congratulate Gloria and Abraham on their 40th  anniversary.

 

On June 17,2007, the Astor Restaurant on Leopard Street, celebrated fifty years of serving the Corpus Christi area. “Papou” Louie Sissamis and his son Bill Sissamis opened the restaurant in 1957. Father Stelios Sitaras held a blessing service at the restaurant on Sunday, June 17th on the occasion of the restaurant’s  50th  anniversary. Today the co-owners of the business are Mike Chryssos and Nick Hrisos.

 

On Sunday, June 17, 2007, Mrs. Marika Govatos celebrated her 95th birthday. The coffee hour after the Divine Liturgy was given in her honor by Mrs. Thalia Plomarity. Mrs. Govatos had the honor of cutting her birthday cake while her friends sang “Happy Birthday.” Congratulations!

 

We would like to congratulate Miss Sophia Sissamis, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Louis Sissamis who graduated from Carroll High School with honors. She has registered to attend Texas A&M University in College Station this fall. Congratulations!

 

MOVING:

Rena and Joseph Quinton of Kingsville, Texas are leaving our area and moving to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on July 24th, 2007. Rena and Joseph moved in August of 2005 to Kingsville, where Rena accepted the position of Assistant Professor of Human Services at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. Rena recently accepted a position in the Philadelphia area where she will be teaching Nutrition.   Joseph and Rena Quinton have been faithful members of St. Nicholas Greek Orth odox Church. In addition, Rena was a member of the Ladies Philoptochos Society. Philoptochos will host the coffee hour in Joseph and Rena’s honor on Sunday, July 22nd  after the Divine Liturgy.  We regret losing such good friends and parishioners, but we wish them “God Speed” as they leave for Philadelphia.

HOSPITALIZED:

Mrs. Tasia Hartofilax underwent thyroid surgery on Wednesday, May 23, 2007, at Doctors Regional Hospital, where she remained for three days. We are glad to see she is up and around and doing well.

 

CONDOLENCES

On Monday, May 29, 2007, Dr. John W. Chriss (87) fell asleep in the Lord after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife of fifty-six years, Mrs. Angeline K. Chriss; two sons, Dr. James J. (Mandy) Chriss of Cleveland, Ohio, and William J. (Mary) Chriss of Austin, Texas; grandchildren, Ariana and John J. Chriss of Cleveland, Ohio, and John A. F. and Olivia Cliriss of Austin, Texas; his sister, Mrs. Katherine Lontos of Corpus Christi, Texas; and his brother, Dr. Charles W. Hrissikopoulos of Greece. Funeral services were held on Friday, June 1,2007 at the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church with Reverend Father Stelios Sitaras and Reverend Father Danut Suciu of St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church of San Antonio Texas officiating.

On July 1st, a forty day Memorial Service will be held for Dr. John W. Chriss. The toffee hour will also be hosted by Mrs. Angie Chriss and family. May his memory be eternal!

MEMORIAL AND TRISACION SERVICES:

On June 17th, a one year Memorial Service was held for Mrs. Silvia Lucia Iftimescu, mother of Mrs. Christina Fratila. Mrs. Fratila also hosted the coffee hour following the Divine Liturgy and Memorial Service. May her memory be eternal!
