DECOMISSIONING AND TRANSFER OF SHIPS TO THE GREEK NAVY

On Friday, March 16, 2007, two mine hunter vessels were decommissioned by the U. S. Navy at a ceremony held at Naval Station Ingleside and transferred to the Greek Navy. Many of our local parishioners, waving Greek and U. S. Flags, attended the very moving ceremony during which the two vessels were blessed by Father Stelios Sitaras. Representing the Greek Navy was Rear Admiral Ioannis Karaiskos. Also participating in the ceremony was Lieutenant Commander George Karageorgis, Commanding Officer of the HS Kalipso and Lieutenant Commander Nikolaos Gounaris, Commander Officer of the HS Evniki along with a crew of approximately 50 officers and sailors from the Royal Greek Navy. The HS Kalipso and the HS Evniki were formerly the USS Heron and the USS Pelican. The two vessels and their crew will remain in Ingleside for another four to six weeks before leaving for Greece. And as they leave our area we wish them all “God Speed!”

“MARCH 25TH LUNCHEON”On Sunday, March 25th, the Parish held a Lenten luncheon following the Divine Liturgy in honor of the Feast of the Annunciation and Greek Independence Day. We were honored to have with us twenty-five men, including the Commaning Officers of the HS Kalipso and the HS Evniki, the two mine hunters that were recently purchased by the Greek Government from the United States. We wish to thank Mr. Theodore Dimopoulos for hosting our Greek guests at the luncheon. Prior to the luncheon children of our parish recited poems in Greek in honor of Greek Independence Day. Our guests from Greece were greatly impressed and visibly moved by the program put on by our children. We would like to thank Mr. & Mrs. Tom Spentzos and their children, George Spentzos, and Mr. & Mrs. Nikolaos Stamoulis. for underwriting the luncheon in memory of Tina’s parents, Miltiades and Eleftheria Zouvia.
