NOVEMBER 2006 GENERAL ASSEMBLY AND PARISH COUNCIL ELECTIONS: The Fall General Assembly will be held during the month of November. A notice will be sent to all parishioners, at least ten days in advance, giving the date and time of the meeting. The agenda will include the receiving of nominations for the 2007 Parish Council. Parishioners in good standing who wish to be nominated should complete the necessary form found elsewhere in this bulletin. Nominations will also be taken from the floor during the General Assembly. Persons wishing to run must be present at the General Assembly and be a member of the parish in good standing. Also on the agenda will be the approval of a budget for the calendar year 2007. CONFIRMATION AND WEDDING: On October 22, 2006, Robert Rene Rubio, his wife, Daisy Bernal Rubio and their son, Robert Thomas Rubio received the Holy Mystery of Chrismation of the Orthodox Christian Church . Sponsors for the Rubio family were Horacio Ortiz, Lalia Bechara Coalson and Rita Lontos. Following their chrismation , Robert and Daisy were married in the Greek Orthodox Church with Father Stelios Sitaras officiating. Best man was Horacio Ortiz. BAPTISM: On October 22, 2006, Mary Grace Rubio, daughter of Robert and Daisy Rubio, was baptized in the Greek Orthodox Church with Father Stelios Sitaras officiating. Godfather was Mathias Robinson. Congratulations. TRAVELERS: On October 19th Harry Plomarity flew to New York City to attend the first meeting of the 2006-2008 term of Archdiocesan Council, called by his Eminence Archbishop Demetrios. Harry is one of two members of the council elected to represent the Denver Metropolis. The following day he attended the annual meeting of the Archons /Order of St. Andrew the Apostle, which was also held in New York City. That evening he attended the Athenagoras Human Rights Award Banquet held by the Archons honoring philanthropist Nicholas J. Booras. On Sunday morning Harry attended the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy at the Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity and witnessed the investiture of the new archons. LEAVING OUR PARISH: On October 8th, Captain Anastasia Yap, who was called to active duty with the 1395th Transportation Terminal Brigade, completed her two year term of active duty at the Port of Corpus Christi, and with her husband, Joseph, left our community and returned to their home in the state of Washington . We wish them God’s speed and we will miss them. On November 5, 2006, Mrs. Fotoni Papakostas and her three children will be leaving Corpus Christi and moving to Athens, Greece, to join her husband, Elias, who is already there. We will miss them very much and wish them God’s speed. 2006 GREEK FESTIVAL: Our annual Greek Festival is now over and we would like to thank everyone who helped to make the festival such a successful event. Special thanks go to our Festival Chairman, Nick Sissamis, for all his hard work (especially for handling the purchase and preparation of all the food items) and most especially for his financial support. We also wish to thank everyone who helped in any way with the festival by: preparing and serving the many food items, handling the bar, bazaar, the outstanding performances by our Hellenic Dancers, packaging and selling the various pastries, publicity, taking photographs, church tours, selling tickets, setting up, cleaning the tables, etc. We also wish to acknowledge the parishioners who made monetary donations to help offset our many festival expenses. Our thanks also to Theodore Dimopoulos, for very graciously paving part of the area on his property and part of the adjacent street for the convenience of ou r festival, in addition to making a very generous monetary contribution. It is impossible to mention and thank everyone who helped in any way with the festival. We thank you all for a job well done. Our customers were well pleased and delighted again to have the festival back at the Church. CONGRATULATIONS: Our Parish Council President, Horacio Ortiz, was featured on the front page of our Caller- Times Newspaper on Sunday, October 8, 2006. The article described the desires that minorities had to achieve an education and the struggles they had to endure to get ahead in life. Mr. Ortiz’s story was most inspiring and he presents an excellent model for our youth of today to follow. We extend him our heartiest congratulations. NEW RESTAURANT: On October 18, 2006, Michel Hamauei opened a new restaurant -:Aladdin’s Restaurant and International Cafe, at 7010 South Padre Island Drive. Michel is also the owner of the “Middle East Market and Deli” on Everhart Road. Congratulations! ANNUAL RED MASS CELEBRATION: On October 4, 2006 Father Stelios, on the invitation of the Most Reverend Edmond Carmody, bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Corpus Christi, participated in the Red Mass Celebration at the Corpus Christi Cathedral. Guest speaker for the sixth annual Red Mass was Judge Carolyn Dineen, Justice, United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. CONDOLENCES: On June 1, 2006, George I. Tsambounieris, fell asleep in the Lord in North Carolina while on vacation here. He was laid to rest in Spoa, Karpathos, Greece. Mr. Tsambounieris is survived by his wife, Anna, and six children. He was the father of Mrs. Rigo Talarantas. May his memory be eternal! On September 9, 2006, Johann “Hanz” Hajek fell asleep in the Lord in Bruck A.D. Mur, Austria, after a prolonged illness. Mr. Hajek was the brother-in-law of Mr. Horacio Ortiz. May his memory be eternal! MEMORIAL SERVICES: On October 8, 2006, a Memorial Service was held for Johnny H. Corovinis of Houston, Texas. Mr. Corovinis fell asleep in the Lord on July 27, 2006. He was the brother of Mrs. Lula Christos of Victoria, Texas. May his memory be eternal! A five year Memorial Service was held on October 8, 2006, for Michael Lignos, who fell asleep in the Lord on October 16, 2001. Mr. Lignos was the father of Mrs. Maria L. Sissamis. May his memory be eternal! A Trisagion Service was held, on October 8th, for Mrs. Maria Mina Piperis, who fell asleep in the Lord on October 13, 1975. She was the mother of Mrs. Penelope Lividitis. May her memory be eternal! The coffee hour following the Divine Liturgy and Memorial Services was hosted by Mrs. Christos, Mrs. Sissamis, and Mrs. Livaditis. On November 12, 2006, a Memorial Service will be held for Anthony Brenna who fell asleep in the Lord on November 10, 1996 in Yardley, Pennsylvania. He was the husband of Mrs. Betty Brenna and the father of Mrs. Lisa Pollakis. The coffee hour will be hosted by Mrs. Brenna and Mrs. Lisa Pollakis. May his memory be eternal!. A four year memorial service will be held on November 26, 2006, for Mrs. Johanna Ortiz, wife of Horacio Ortiz. The coffee hour will be hosted by the Ortiz family. May her memory be eternal! CORRECTION: In the October bulletin under “Loving Memory”, there was an error in the spelling of the name of Alfred Michael Samman who died October 17, 1965. The Editor regrets the error WEDDING ANNIVERSARIES:We congratulate all who will be celebrating their wedding anniversary during the month of November: Bill and Sophia Hartofilax November 2, 1967 NOVEMBER COFFEE HOUR: Parishioners wishing to host the coffee hour after the Divine Liturgy on Sunday during the month of November should sign their name on the poster in the Church Hall. Please volunteer and help to host the coffee. By doing so, the task will not fall on the same ladies every Sunday. The “Fellowship Hour” proivides us the opportunity to meet our visitors, and to visit with each other. Thank you.
