JUNE 2006

BIRTHS:

Fotini and Elias Papakostas became the parents of a baby girl, Afroditi, born May 2, 2006. She weighed 7 pounds 4 ounces and was 20 inches long. She was welcomed by her brothers, Konstantinos Elias and Giorgios Ioannis. Congratulations!

WEDDING:

Mary and David Borchardt were married on April 30th, 2006, in a ceremony at the Art Center. Mary, who is serving in the Army, is the daughter of Horacio Ortiz. A lovely Hawaiian reception was held at the Art Center following the ceremony. All who attended had a very enjoyable time. For their wedding trip, Mary and David traveled to Europe where they toured several countries and went on a cruise of the Greek Islands. Congratulations!

BABY SHOWER:

On Wednesday, May 24, 2006, Mrs. Maria Sissamis Papakonstantinos gave a baby shower for her daughter Mrs. Anna Maragakis who is expecting the latter part of July. The shower took place at the Longhorn Steakhouse on SPID. Anna is the granddaughter of Mrs. Ann Sissamis. Everyone who attended had a very enjoyable time. Best of luck, Anna.

CONGRATULATIONS:

Jessica Parker, granddaughter of Horacio Ortiz, won first place in science at the Texas state competition in Dallas, Texas held April 26-29, 2006. The topic was on the use of the polygraph in the criminal justice division.

George Zannaras will be moving to Austin, Texas at the end of June. He has been accepted at the “Texas Culinary Academy Le Cordon Bleu” program. This academy is affiliated with the Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, France. His goal is to become an executive chef. George is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Tony Zannaras and the grandson of Mrs. Mariam Psimaris. We will miss him and wish him the best in his endeavors.

 

APPRECIATION LUNCHEON:

On Saturday, July 8, 2006, an appreciation luncheon will be held in honor of Bill Chriss and his family who will be moving to Austin, Texas the latter part of July. Dr. Nicholas Hallick is organizing this luncheon and has indicated that the luncheon which will be a fund raiser for the Church will be held at noon at Niko’s Restaurant at 5409 Saratoga. The luncheon will be by invitation only and reservations will be required. This luncheon is being given by the Parish Council and the Community in appreciation of Bill’s service to his community and church. Details of the luncheon will appear on the invitation.

DONATION:

Mrs. Marie Crumly has donated fifty Liturgy Hymnals to St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in memory of her husband and parents. We thank her for her generous donation.

TRAVELERS:

On April 29, 2006, Harry Plomarity traveled to Houston, Texas to attend the banquet celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Denver Metropolis. Honored guests at the banquet were his Eminence Archbishop Demetrios and his Eminence Metropolitan Isaiah. Also attending the banquet from Victoria were Dr. and Mrs. George Boozalis, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Christos and Mr. and Mrs. Craig Calhoun. Over $100,000 was raised during the celebration in Houston to benefit the new Denver Metropolis Center.

On May 19th Harry flew to Denver, Colorado, to attend the Denver Metropolis Board meeting. He returned home on Sunday, May 21st.

Mrs. Dora Thomas and her husband Tom spent the Easter holidays in San Diego, California with Dora’s daughter, Natalie Hancock and her son Alexander, and with Dora’s mother, Mrs. Erasmia Kaminopoulou.

After Easter Dora and Tom and Mrs. Kaminopoulou returned to Corpus Christi.

On June 1st, Natalie and her son, Alexander, will arrive in Corpus Christi and will stay with Dora and Tom Hudson for several months before relocating to Oklahoma. Natalie’s husband is in the service and is being re-assigned to a base in Oklahoma.

VISITORS:

On May 20th Andy Cofas arrived in Corpus Christi to spend the weekend with his mother, Mrs. Rita Lontos. While here he visited with his father, John Cofas of Portland, and with friends and relatives.

AWARDS:

On May 21, 2006, after the Divine Liturgy, Matthew Wolfe was presented with the Boy Scout Alpha Omega Religion Badge presented by Father Stelios Sitaras. His father, Gary Wolfe pinned the badge on him. Congratulations!

Mel Eliades, D.O., a local physician, was recently awarded life membership in the Texas Osteopathic Medical Association. Life membership is awarded for exemplary service to the profession and for a minimum of twenty-five years as a member. He has been an active member for forty-five years. Dr. Eliades is the medical director of Bay Area Medical Center Family Practice Residency Program. Congratulations!

ARTOCLASIA:

On Friday, April 28th, an Artoclasia service was held on the feast of Zoodochos Peghe (Life Giving Fountain) by Mrs. Penelope Livaditis for the health of her family.

HOSPITALIZED:

Mrs. Natalie Rogen was hospitalized on May 8th, 2006, at Christus Spohn Hospital - South, where she underwent surgery. Mrs. Tamara HOSPITALIZED, continued:

Terichow, mother of Mrs. Natalie Rogen, came to Corpus Christi to help Natalie during her recovery. We wish Natalie a speedy recovery.

On May 22nd, Mrs. Tasia Paul was hospitalized at Bay Area - Corpus Christi Medical Center after a fall at home. Let’s keep her in our prayers.

CONDOLENCES:

Mrs. Irene Orphanos (84) fell asleep in the Lord on May 1, 2006 in Reading, Pennsylvania. She was the aunt of Tony Zannaras. May her memory be eternal!

On May 6, 2006, Mrs. Sophia Lignos, mother of Mrs Maria L. Sissamis fell asleep in the Lord in New York City after a long illness. A Trisagion Service was held in New York City and the funeral was held in Spoa, Karpathos, Greece. Maria and her two sisters accompanied their mother to Greece for burial. May her memory be eternal!

Antoinette (Patsy) Kandis fell asleep in the Lord on May 10, 2006 after a lengthy illness. Two days later, on May 12, 2006, her husband, Gregory Kandis suddenly fell asleep in the Lord. A double funeral was held in Victoria, Texas on May 13, 2006 at the Trinity Episcopal Church, with Father Stelios Sitaras officiating. Patsy was the sister of Andrew Christos and Gregory was the brother of Bealyo Giannukos of Houston. A forty day memorial will be held in Corpus Christi, Texas on June 18th. May their memory be eternal!

GRADUATES:

On Sunday, May 21, 2006, this year’s high school graduates were honored. Demetri Karagas graduated from Calallen High School. Olivia Chriss graduated from Ray High School and John Koutroupis graduated from Ray High School.

 

END OF CATECHISM SCHOOL YEAR:

On May 21st, all of the students who attended Catechism School this year received certificates. Demetri and Sophia Sanchez had perfect attendance and received a perfect attendance pin and a gift. Demetri and Sophia also received an award for collecting the most money for the Orthodox Christian Mission Center Money Box Program. We would like to thank the parents who brought their children to Church each Sunday during the year. Our thanks also to Miss Olga Plomarity, Catechism School Coordinator, and to the teachers: Mrs. Soula Piperis, Miss Sophia Sissamis, Mrs JoAnn Talarantas, Mrs. Maria Papakostas, Mrs. Karen Karagas, Mrs. Peggy Paraskevas, Mrs. Maria Sissamis, Mrs. Anna Maragakis, and Mrs. Natalie Rogen. Substitute teachers were Mrs. Constance Plomarity Sanchez, Mrs. Alexia Maragakis, and Miss Olga Plomarity. We thank all the teachers who helped out this year.

MEMORIAL SERVICES:

On June 4, 2006, a one year memorial service will be held for Mrs. Betty Zampikos who fell asleep in the Lord on June 6, 2005. She was the wife of Mitchell Zampikos and the mother of George Zampikos and Diana Zampikos. The coffee hour will be hosted by the Zampikos and Psimaris families. May her memory be eternal!

On June 18, 2006, a forty day Memorial Services will be held for Gregory and Patsy Kandis of Victoria. Mrs. Kandis fell asleep in the Lord on May 10th, 2006, and Gregory Kandis fell asleep in the Lord on May 12th, 2006. The coffee hour will be hosted by the Christos and Kandis families. May their memory be eternal!
