BIRTHS: John and Anna Maragakis became the proud parents of a baby boy, their first child, born on July 15, 2006. The baby who weighed seven pounds and was twenty inches in length will be named Emmanuel. He is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Papakonstantinos and Mr. and Mrs. Emmanuel Maragakis and the great-grandson of Mrs. Anna Sissamis and Ioannis Maragakis. Congratulations! BRIDAL SHOWER: On July 15th, 2006, a bridal shower was given for Miss Laila Bechara, bride elect of Clay Coalson. Hostesses were Mrs. Georgette Afram, Miss Samia Bechara, Mrs. Hala Ghably, Mrs. Alicia Hamauei and Mrs. Latife Bechara-Medina. The wedding is set for August 19th, 2006 at the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church. Congratulations! CHURCH SIGN INSTALLED: The sign adjacent to the Church with the Church’s name, address, telephone number and time of services has been completed. We would like to thank Mrs. Stacy Bisbikos-Bishop of San Antonio, a former member of our parish, for her donation to cover the cost of constructing the sign and Mr. and Mrs. George Paraskevas for donating the lettering and glass covering for the sign. We are grateful for their generous donations. TRAVELERS: On July 11, Harry Plomarity and his daughter, Olga left for St. Thomas in the U. S. Virgin Islands, to attend the National Convention of the Navy League of the United States. On July 15th, they flew from St. Thomas to Nashville, Tennessee to also attend the Clergy-Laity Congress. Harry, Olga and Father Stelios were our parish’s delegates to the congress. Also attending the Clergy-Laity Congress/Philoptochos Conference from our parish was Mrs. Natalie Rogen, who was the official delegate from our local Philoptochos Chapter. Parish Council President Horacio Ortiz, together with his granddaughter, Keisha, and grandson, Mathias, left July 17, 2006 for Las Vegas, Nevada to visit with Mr. Ortiz’ s brother, who was celebrating his 50th wedding anniversary and to bring back to Corpus Christi Mr. Ortiz’s great-granddaughter, Alexandria, who celebrated her 3rd birthday on July 27th. Despite running into some very turbulent weather they had a very enjoyable trip and returned home safely on July 23rd. On August 3, 2006, Mrs. Marioara Moody will leave on a trip to her beautiful country, Romania. She will go to Alba-Julia to visit her relative, Professor Jleana Jivan and Dr.Anca Jivan. She will also travel by train to Sebes-Alba, her native city , to visit another relative, Dr. Traian Posteseu and his wife Marioara and her Aunt Florica. Mrs. Moody will return to Corpus Christi on the 7th of October. We hope she has a wonderful time in Romania visiting friends and relatives. 4th OF JULY CELEBRATION:On July 2, 2006, the Catechism School gave a luncheon in honor of our Nations’s Independence. The menu included hot dogs and hamburgers and ice cream and brownies for dessert. We would like to thank Mrs. Lisa Pollakis for the cooking the luncheon and Olga Plomarity for decorating the hall and coordinating the event. Our thanks also to Mrs. Tracy Andreades, Mrs. Natalie Rogen, Ted Andreadis and their children, Demetri and Elena, Mrs. Esther Valerde, Constance Sanchezz and her children, Demetri and Sophia for their help. Our thanks also to everyone who attended the luncheon and supported the Catechism School. All proceeds from the luncheon will go toward the cost of Cathecism School books and supplies for the coming school year. FAREWELL LUNCHEON:On Saturday, July 8th, a luncheon was held at Niko’s Steakhouse for Bill and Mary Chriss and their children, as they prepare to move to Austin, Texas. The luncheon, a fund raiser for the church, was attended not only by our parishioners, but by many of Bill and Mary’s friends. We would like to thank Dr. Nicholas Hallick and Mrs. Rita Lontos for organizing the luncheon and Nick Sissamis for allowing us to have the luncheon at his new restaurant. ENROLLED IN CULINARY ACADEMY:George Zannaras left July 8th, 2006, for Austin, Texas where he is enrolled in the “Texas Culinary Academy Le Cordon Bleu” program. The academy is affiliated with the Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, France. George is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Tony Zannaras and the grandson of Mrs. Mariam Psimaris. We wish George the best of luck as he enters the culinary academy. ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT: Alexis Mays has been accepted to the early admission dual-credit program at Del Mar College. Alexis, fifteen years old, has been homeschooled since the third grade. Her high placement test scores qualify her for numerous college freshman courses. This fall Alexis will take Freshman English and Introduction to Computers at Del Mar College. She will major in Multimedia/Internet Design. She will also continue her homeschool in 2006/2007 with studies in College Algebra, Creative Writing, SAT Math, SAT Reading and SAT Writing. Alexis is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Bill Mays. Congratulations! HONORED: On July 6, 2006, Linda Gialouris was installed as secretary of the Sparkling City Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association for the 2006-2007 year. Linda, who served as the 2005-2006 president of the ABWA chapter, was honored during the installation as its 2006 Woman of the Year. Congratulations! SURGERY:In July, Mrs. Ann Shibylo underwent surgery on her foot. We are glad to hear that she is now up and around. CORRECTION: In the July bulletin, part of a sentence was inadvertently omitted from the “Tribute to Helen Govatos”. The sentence should have read: “Helen is survived by her sister-in-law, Mrs. Bealyo Giannukos of Houston, Texas, and Mrs. Marika Govatos of Corpus Christi, Texas, her nephew, George Govatos of Tupelo, Mississi, and many nephews and nieces and great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.” We apologize for the omission. COFFEE HOUR: We need hosts for our Sunday fellowship hour following the Divine Liturgy. If you are willing to host the coffee hour on any of the open dates listed below, please sign up on the poster in the church hall. WEDDING ANNIVERSARIES: We congratulate George and Helen Bottis who will be celebrating their forty-second wedding anniversary on August 28. BIRTHDAYS: We wish everyone who is celebrating a birthday in August a “Very Happy Birthday!” (In the July bulletin we failed to include the birthday of Alexandria Ewing, who celebrated her third birthday on July 27. Alexandria is the daughter of Keisha Dirk and the great-granddaughter of Mr. Horacio Ortiz. Happy Belated Birthday, Alexandria!)
